The University of Iowa College of Dentistry is one of only two dental schools in the U.S. that offers program in all dental specialties. Graduate programs leading to MS and PhD degrees also are available. The College enjoys a close relationship with the other units that comprise The University of Iowa Health Sciences campus, including the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, and Pharmacy; The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; the Bowen Science Building and the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences. Through this association, the College of Dentistry has developed interdisciplinary programs in diagnostic testing, research, and patient care and has earned international recognition for teaching, research, and service.
Faculty include generalists and specialists in every discipline of dentistry as well as faculty who hold PhDs in biological or related fields. Most clinical faculty are private practitioners, who usually practice one day per week. Students at Iowa benefit from a 3-to-1 ratio of dental students to full-time clinical faculty. Teaching is the primary responsibility of 114 full-time faculty.
The College of Dentistry currently enrolls nearly 320 students in its DDS program and is the only provider of predoctoral dental education in Iowa.
The College of Dentistry is located in an attractive modern building that offers well-organized space and the latest equipment for teaching and research. One complete wing of the College is devoted to clinical teaching, with various departmental clinic facilities, laboratories, clinical research space, and a cafeteria.
The second wing houses teaching laboratories, a simulation clinic, the College's administration offices, educational media service, the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, and the Dows Institute for Dental Research, which occupies the entire fourth floor.
The nearby Hardin Library for the Health Sciences contains materials in all health areas and has more than 340,000 volumes, 18,000 of which are dental subjects, and nearly 2,500 journals, including 300 dental journals.
Students who enroll in the College of Dentistry will find themselves among more than 18,000 undergraduate students and about 8,600 graduate and professional students at The University of Iowa. Students come from all 50 states and more than 100 other countries.
